The 2004 Hurricane Season - One of the Worst Ever on Record
|
Charley. Frances. Ivan. Jeanne. Common everyday names that are now all too familiar.
Especially to our friends down in Florida, the Caribbean and the Gulf Coast! The 2004
Hurricane season thus far has proven to be one of the most costliest, deadliest and most
active seasons in history. Vicious hurricanes have been responsible for billions upon
billions of dollars in damage on both coasts of Florida (fortunately sparing Miami /
Homestead which had been devasted by Andrew back in 1995). The devastation in
Grenada and Grand Cayman is incredible. Not to mention the absolutely horrendous
tragedy of Haiti who has now lost close to 2,000 citizens due to floods and mudslides
resulting from Hurricane Jeanne. We have all kept these ones in our prayers throughout
the last 2 months. Let's continue to do so, as the season isn't over yet..... Esmee Kyles
Introducing a New Feature of our Newsletter: "Experience of the Month"
|
When I first started this Newsletter back in early 2003, I played with the idea of having
certain "features", perhaps a comic strip corner, a quote for the day, or something
light-hearted and fun to read, besides just travel updates and info on our group trips.
Well we started featuring "Travel News and Specials" which features some eye-opening
tidbit in the industry that is noteworthy. But I think what's missing here are Experiences.
We get so many of them in e-mail, don't we? Some funny, some sad, some inspiring. I
have read some fantastic experiences, and I share some with my personal friends in the
truth, but it would be great to relay one or two great ones right here in our newsletter.
So if you have a REALLY good and FACTUAL experience (especially ministry experiences
and travel experiences) and you want to submit it, please do, and at the end of the
month, we'll post them on our message boards. At the end of the month, we'll hold a poll
for our favorite, and the #1 choice will be posted right here on our Monthly Newsletter.
Remember friends, the experience should be based on fact, and not fiction. Also -- it
doesn't have to be a new experience. If you haven't joined our message boards yet, you
can apply to join at: http://groups.msn.com/WeeBeeTravelFriends
Proving an Urban Legend True???
|
We read a lot of sensationalistic stuff in e-mail; most are considered hoaxes or urban
legends, like winning a check from Microsoft and AOL; or for every person you forward this
to, the child with cancer gets 10 cents, or something. It's all a hoax. But this one that I
got in e-mail, shockingly enough wasn't. In fact after doing research as it turns out it's
actually true. The e-mail warned people that, after you check out of a hotel, to keep the
plastic door key card that you were given for your room, because it contains your personal
information on it (including your credit card info). I found that hard to believe. But oddly
enough in some studies that were done, it was shown that most hotels do not keep that
information on the keycard because it is of no use to them. However there was a study
that showed it to be true in about 2 or 3 cases. After swiping the magnetic stripe of one
key, the guest's information was contained on the key: including his address, phone, and
credit card information. The article stressed that there was no need to panic, and that it's
a rare occurrence, but they recommended that if you feel unsure, you can just keep the
key and not turn it back into the hotel. Either way just be safe.
